Description: 1493 Incunabula The Siege of Constantinople Foliu CCXLIX Nuremberg Chronicle German
Single page of Schedel Hartman's
(1440-1515)
Nuremberg Chronicle
incunabulum, translated into German by Georg Alt, and published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493. Schedel's
Nuremberg Chronicle
was perhaps the most elaborate of its time. Along with the
Nuremberg Chronicle's
standard
biblical paraphrase and description of human history as it relates to the Bible, Schedel's publication also included
more than 1,800 woodcut illustrations. This is perhaps what contributed to its popularity with more than 300 German examples surviving today.
Hand-colored woodcut depicts
Constantinopolis, or The Siege of Constantinople, in the year 1453
.
Text describes the content of the illustrations in German.
The reference drawings for the woodcuts were produced by the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and engraved by
Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.
